Transforming canvas into thoughtful dialogs
My work is rooted in the narrative traditions of the arts using a variety of traditional drawing, painting, and printing techniques and mediums. While in the process of creating a work of art, I think more of art’s tradition rather than personal style. The label best describing my actions as an artist would be that of a fusionist. The fusion of artistic movements and concepts offers me a wider variety of stylistic choices and allows me to create for art’s reasons rather than those solely of my own.
I create not pictures but dialogs. The dialog first emerges into consciousness through the complementary actions of altered awareness and metacognition. Its emanating source is a combination of personal experience and experiential interpretations of the many and varied resources I actively pursue specifically to make and improve my art.
The initial dialog is not a conscious choice but one that presents itself to be created. It is my task to discover what art wants of me, how to utilize my practiced skills best and learned construction patterns to facilitate the existence of art. The art begins with a skeletal idea of theme and a working title. It is only through the working dialog of ideas, abilities, and limitations of skill and medium that the full meaning of the artwork and its title become known.
